Soft Tissue Surgery Options at Lost Dog Vet

Soft tissue surgery refers to procedures unrelated to bones, joints, or the nervous system. The following is a look at some of the soft tissue surgeries we offer right here at our El Paso practice:

Spay and Neuter: Beyond preventing unwanted litters and relieving overcrowded shelters, spaying and neutering offer significant health benefits by reducing the risk of reproductive cancers. They also help control undesirable behaviors and allow your pet to live a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Wound and Laceration Repair: Wounds and lacerations resulting from accidents or scuffles with other animals can cause infections and lead to serious complications if not treated. Depending on the extent of damage, treatment can range from sutures to surgical repair.

Foreign Body Removal: Pets are notorious for ingesting small objects or toys, which can become lodged in their digestive tract, leading to blockages. An intestinal blockage is a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate surgical intervention.

Mass Removal: Just like humans, cats and dogs can develop masses or tumors that can be benign or cancerous. Mass removal is often recommended to safeguard your furry companion's health.

Gastropexy: Gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV), also known as bloat, is a life-threatening condition requiring emergency surgery. Gastropexy is a surgical procedure that involves securing the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent the rotation that leads to GDV. It may also be recommended after correcting GDV to prevent it from recurring.

Pyometra: Pyometra is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus that usually affects intact female pets. Treatment often involves the removal of the uterus to save the life of your furry friend.

Cystotomy: Bladder stones can lead to pain, inflammation, difficulty urinating, and blockages. Cystotomy is usually performed to remove bladder stones or obstructions, preventing serious complications.

Splenectomy: A splenectomy is the removal of an organ called the spleen. We usually recommend this emergency surgery in cases of tumors, certain blood disorders, or a ruptured spleen resulting from trauma.

Hernia repair: A hernia happens due to weakness or muscle tears that allow organs to push through. Hernia repair addresses congenital or acquired hernias, alleviating your pet's discomfort and preventing complications.

Exploratory Laparotomy: When non-invasive diagnostic imaging tools fail to produce a clear diagnosis of abdominal issues, we may recommend an exploratory laparotomy. The procedure allows us to examine the abdominal cavity and organs to detect abnormalities.

Eye Surgery: We offer eye surgeries to address a range of concerns. These include cherry eyes, a condition where tear glands become prolapsed and protrude out of the bottom or corner of the eye. Entropion, on the other hand, is characterized by the eyelids rolling inwards, causing eye irritation and discomfort. We also perform enucleations, which involve the removal of the eye from the socket to address severe damage from trauma, tumors, or infection.
