Pre-appointment Checklist
Preparing for Your Pet's Veterinary Visit
Ensuring that your pet's visit to the veterinarian goes smoothly requires some preparation. Follow this checklist to make sure you and your pet are ready for the appointment.
Before the
Appointment
Schedule the Appointment
Call the veterinary clinic to book a time that is convenient for you and your pet. Confirm the date and time, and ask if there are any special instructions or requirements.
Prepare a List of Concerns
Write down any questions or concerns you have about your pet's health, behavior, diet, or any changes you've noticed. This will help you remember to discuss them during the appointment.
Gather Medical Records
Collect any previous medical records, including vaccination history, lab results, and any other relevant documents. If this is your first visit to the clinic, consider asking your previous veterinarian to forward these records.
Fast if Necessary
If the clinic advises fasting your pet before the appointment (especially for certain tests or procedures), make sure to follow their instructions. Typically, this involves withholding food for 8-12 hours prior.
On the Day of
the Appointment
Secure Transportation
Make sure you have a safe and comfortable way to transport your pet to the clinic. This may involve using a pet carrier for smaller animals or ensuring larger pets are securely leashed.
Pack Essentials
Bring your pet's leash, collar, crate, or carrier. Also, pack any medications your pet is currently taking, including flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives.
Stay Calm
Pets can pick up on your anxiety, so try to remain calm and composed. This will help your pet feel more at ease.
Bring a Sample
If requested, bring a fresh urine or stool sample. The clinic will usually provide instructions on how to collect and store the sample properly.
Arrive Early
Plan to arrive at least 10-15 minutes early to allow time for check-in and any necessary paperwork.
During
the Appointment
Provide Information
Share your pet's medical history and any concerns or observations you've noted. Be open and honest with the veterinarian.
Take Notes
Write down important information, such as medication dosages, feeding instructions, and follow-up appointment dates.
Ask Questions
Don't hesitate to ask for clarification on any procedures, diagnoses, or treatments. Make sure you understand the vet's recommendations and follow-up care.
After
the Appointment
Follow-Up
Schedule any necessary follow-up appointments or tests as advised by the veterinarian.
Administer Treatments
Follow the veterinarian's instructions for administering medications or treatments. Stick to the recommended schedule and dosage.
Monitor your Pet
Keep an eye on your pet for any changes in behavior or health after the visit, and contact the clinic if you have any concerns.
Maintain Records
Update your pet's medical records with any new information from the appointment, including vaccination dates, test results, and treatment plans.
